The Joker Must Live On

11 01 2009

There has been a bit of speculation about a “Dark Knight Sequel.” Um… Isn’t a sequel’s sequel a trilogy? Apparently the Dark Knight was so good that it negated the existence of Batman Begins. Anyways, there has been speculation that Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan (basically the brains behind the Batman Reboot) have been noncommittal to making another Batman movie.

For starters: Bullshit. The Dark Knight was one of the biggest blockbuster hits in the history of biggest blockbuster hits AND Bale and Nolan didn’t really have to sell their souls to make the movie. The movie isn’t some typical shallow summer movie. They have basically raised the bar. Actually, thats an understatement. They have taken the bar from wherever it was before, erected a new bar-holder, then elevated that bar-holder they just built by about ten feet, and then placed the bar there. And not only for comic book movies. For any remake of a formerly popular movie or character, fans are now pining for “reboot origin stories.” Fans crave the psychology behind the character. It is no longer acceptable to blindly declare that Bruce Wayne is Batman – don’t worry why he rolls like he does.

Anyways. Dark Knight was good. We’ve established that. There’s no chance these two don’t want to make another. They’re simply putting their onions on the table and telling the studio to pay up if they want another movie. Which is fine, because The Dark Knight made the studio a boatload of money. Pay the talent.

Until now there has been no confirmation, AFAIK, from Nolan and Bale that a third installation is in the works. And it has been widely assumed that the Joker is gone, with the Heath Ledger situ. Ah, but according to this article a source close to the two says characters are separate from the actor (see Mrs. Cruise, er… Katie Holmes to Jake Gyllenhaal’s Sister, er… Maggie Gyllenhaall). So the Joker could live on?

!.

Ok, exciting, but who could ever come close to Heath Ledger as the Joker? What actor, short of Shaquille O’Neal during his Shazam days, could take on such a challenge? Scroll down to the comments of the article, and you’ll see a brilliant suggestion. A suggestion so brilliant that if it does not happen, I will sit through Batman Begins’ Sequel’s Sequel wondering what if? What if this man had indeed taken the role?

The man, if you can degrade him by calling him such an earthly term, is of course Daniel Day-Lewis BBHN. Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood is every bit the “wait, you mean that was an actor and not the real character in the movie?” that Ledger was in The Dark Knight. He is a beast. Crazy. Owns the movie. Owns you while you watch the movie. I don’t want to post any clips from the movie, as they would spoil the parts that make the tingly bits tingle, but you must watch it. And Daniel Day Lewis must be the Joker.
